Today was my best day of cash game sessions since I've been back from Europe. After sunday's tournaments, I haven't really wanted to play tournaments since. I go through phases of wanting to play live cash games, live tournaments, online cash games, and online tournaments. Many players only play one or two of these categories, and very few play all of them, and even less are successful at all of these disciplines. One example is a friend of mine that I met through poker named Tyler. Tyler is quite possibly the best live players (online and tournaments) that i have ever seen. He has made it to the final 15 in five live tournaments this month of the 10 or so that he played, all of which had 200-600 players. He happened to do the best in the smaller buy-ins, but he still cashed for about $50,000 this month. He also kills the cash games every time I see him playing live. However, he admits to being a losing player online, so he doesn't play much on there. After seeing this kind of thing, I take pride in being an excellent winning player in all of these 4 categories.
Anyways, I've really been feeling the cash games the last few days, and I've been getting back into playing the 6-handed games (I have been favoring heads-up play previously). I played probably 4 hours of 6 tables of six-handed games with 2/4 blinds ($400 buy-in) and won $3600. I also player two heads up matches (not during the 6-handed session, that's too much). One was against a known very good player, but I felt good about my game so I gave it a shot. I only played him for 27 minutes until he made some nice adjustments so I happily left with a $600 win. The other match was crazy. It lasted 202 minutes which shocked me because I figured that he would leave if he ever got up by a significant amount. He took like a $400 lead until I came back to up about 300. He then crushed me for a about 40 minutes until he was up about 700. Also, the aggressiveness of the match increased the whole time and at this point about every third hand was raised and re-raised before the flop. I won a couple big pots and got up 1100 on him. He one one more big pot before quiting the match which was ok with me because it was fairly intense, and I was happy to survive with a $700 win ending the day on a $4800 upswing.
I also got an oil change so my car is ready for the drive down to OC on friday. I am moving down there back into the house I lived in during my last two years of college.

Sunday Tournaments 11/26 / football rant
Yesterday I played in all of the big sunday online tournaments as well as some smaller ones. The total buy-ins were about $2000 and I cashed for $650 total for a net loss of about $1350. Although I expect to lose most sundays and hope to hit one big once in a while, this was a particularly poor showing. I had a little momentum going in the biggest one and the 3rd biggest one, but I ended up busting out fairly close to the money. I think I played alright most of the day, but probably not as well as I should have. With all of the great online tournament players these days, I have to be at my best all the time to have the kind of edge that I want. I think I might have gone into "auto-pilot" for a little bit of the day. By that I just mean that I didn't really think through some decisions as well as I should have. I also played some heads-up and netted a $1000 win. That helped bring the day very close to break even, which is good for a sunday that I don't even make one final table.
I actually had to stop playing for a few minutes after the Broncos game because it was so frustrating. Right when it ended I just changed the channel really fast and tried to not really think about how bad it was. I usually don't really get flustered by my teams losing games, but I thought that the loss was so avoidable that it's inexcusable. This was a big game for the Broncos to stay even in the division, and they really were dominating the game at Chicago in the rain, which is not easy to do. Shanahan just got stubborn and said "I'm just going to keep kicking it to one of the best kick returners in history, even though when every other team kicks to him, he runs it back for a touchdown almost every time." Even after the first one, they still had the game in hand until they let him have another touchdown and then got the last punt blocked. You'd think that Shanahan would have figured out to not kick to great return men when Dante Hall used to single handily beat them when he was on the chiefs. I understand kicking to him in a tie game or if you're behind because you don't want to give the ball to the other team at the 40, but when you're up by 14 with time running out, all you need to do is avoid quick scores. So that sucks, but Rockies went to the world series, so it's alright.
I was talking to Zack Marker about Nebraska football and how they give up 60-80 points a game. He said a very logical statement that they players must just not be giving 100% effort. But really if you think about it, there's teams with way less talent that might not be totally motivated by the end of the year that give up a lot of points like 35-42. 60-80 is a totally different story though. I think they must actually be trying very hard. Trying hard to give up so many points, that is. It's like Callahan implemented the Grinell College/Redlands University defensive philosophy where they just give up points as quickly as possible so they can get the ball back sooner. I guess Callahan must have told Shanahan about this theory and Shanahan executed it to perfection by kicking the ball to Hester every opportunity that he could. He was probably on the sideline thinking "my offense looks so great right now. I'm such a genius. Let's get the ball back right now so I can watch that machine move the ball sown the field. Hey Todd!! Kick the ball right to Hester!!!"
Obviously it's not all Shanahan's fault, but he gets to take the responsibility because he's the head coach. While I'm not happy with the teams that I follow right now, there were many great games on this weekend. The SEC games were great (Ark vs LSU and UK vs Tenn) I love watching Arkansas' offense with Darren McFadden who is a man among boys. I wish they didn't struggle so bad earlier in the year so he could win the Heisman. I think Tim Tebow deserves it now which is ok because I like Florida, but I don't like him very much because his demeanor reminds me of the quarterback before Chris Leak at UF. Yep, Tebow reminds be of Rex Grossman, which is about the worst comparison that one can achieve.

Another Win in Pendleton
Once again I had a successful trip to Pendleton. As always, there were a lot of very nice people there and many that I already knew from the Seattle area or from other tournaments. I played in 4 tournaments, one each day from thursday to sunday. I already documented, I took 6th place on thursday and followed that with non-cashes in the two biggest tournaments there on friday and saturday. However, I won the sunday tournament with about 250 entrants, which was good for about 13k. I really played well in this tournament by building chips early, then doubling up to become one of the chip leaders in the middle of the tournament. I then slowly increased my chip stack by picking up some blinds and winning some small pots. I was probably second or third in chips entering the final table. This final table was a bit tougher than the one on thursday with two very good players and a few decent players mixed with 3 weak players who were short stacked and out very quickly. A little later I lost about half of my chips when I got a guy all in before the flop with KK vs his 44. A 4 came on the river to cripple me, but I battled back by winning some blinds. A little later I had a scare when I raised with QQ and a very good player moved all in from the big blind. I had been raising his blind a ton, so I knew he would do this at some point assuming I had a weak hand and would fold. I quickly called and he was bluffing with K7. However the flop came K87, so I needed one of the two remaining queens to stay alive in the tournament (I had 10% chance to win at this point after having about 70% before this horrible flop). A queen came on the turn to came on the turn and a 7 came on the river giving me a higher full house. He had about 10 fans there and they went crazy when the 7 came because they thought that his full house was the winner. It was kind of funny, especially when I was looking down at the chip lead having just crippled the best opponent at the table.
At this point there were 5 of us remaining and the question was posed about making a deal and splitting up the remaining prize money. All of the other players were interested in a deal, but I shut it down before negotiations began knowing that I had the best chance a this point, and I was very confident that I had control of the table. 5th place then got knocked out before I knocked out the 4th and 3rd place finishers. Now I was heads-up with one of the weaker players (yet very erratic, which made him tough to play against during the final table. He was the type of guy that I had a tough time figuring out what he's doing because he doesn't even know what he's doing). I had 330K in chips and he had 130K in chips entering heads up play which lasted 4 hands until I won the $13,000 for first place.

First tournament in Pendleton
I got into Pendleton last night at about 5, and bought my tournament tickets because this place has huge lines to buy-in the day of the tournament. Then I played cash games for a few hours before going to the hotel at like 10. I won about $800, and played pretty well. Today I woke up feeling pretty good about the shootout No-Limit Hold em tournament. (in a shootout you must win all the chips off of your starting table of 9 in order to advance. In all other tournaments seats are filled as players bust out.) I played well at my first table and was able to be the last one standing of 2 or 3 other good players and 6 or 7 weaker players. The final three were the three best which is usually not the case, but it made for tough 3-handed and heads-up play.
After a 2 hour break, the remaining 33 resumed play. I didn't really do anything for the first hour, then got lucky when I made a flush against a guy's AA. After that I played very well and after doubling up with AK vs. 88 with 11 players remaining, I was in good shape for the final table. I was picking up some blinds until I played a big pot against the chip leader when I was second in chips, and I was out sixth (of 318). After analysing that hand, I don't feel I made a mistake although I have not talked to any other good poker players about it. To be honest, I don't want to even explain the hand on here because it was quite an advanced play, and it should be used sparingly, so I wouldn't want any readers of this blog to read this and start making similar plays in wrong situations.
Sixth place was $4k +change, while first was 16,000. I believe second was like 13,300, and the rest I don't know because my eye was really on #1, as always in tournaments. I'm fairly disappointed because I know that I was the best player of the remaining 6 by quite a large margin. However, based on the structure of this tournament, the blinds had gotten extremely high, so luck was a much higher factor.
The tournaments tomorrow and Saturday will much bigger, so hopefully I can win one of those. I think writing this was therapeutic because I already feel better about it.

Sunday Tournaments
Yesterday I played in 5 tournaments and only cashed in one. Two of them were to win the Bahamas trip, and 3 were cash. I got in one by using points that I have accumulated, and I won a satellite (smaller tournament to win free entry to the larger tournament) into one, so I didn't pay nearly as much as I do on a normal sunday in entry fees. I cashed in the biggest one one the five, but just barely for $440 (around 510th place). First place was $247,000, so congrats to whoever won that one. My net loss on the tournaments was like $500. I also played a little heads up and some six-handed cash games before and after the tournaments. I lost a little in the six-handed games, and crushed one maniac in a heads-up match, so I ended up with a small gain on the day.
Today I'm heading to Pendleton Oregon for the Pendleton Round-Up poker tournament. They have this tournament twice a year, and I have gone to the last two. Last Fall I went for 4 days and did poorly in the tournaments (there is a tournament every day for like 10 days), but did extremely well in the cash games. In the Spring I went for 7 days with my friend Ted and I did ok in the cash games and well in the tournaments. I played in 5 or 6, cashed in one and won another one. The tournament I won had around 650 people in it, and it is still the biggest tournament that I have won to date. Tonight and tomorrow night I am stopping in Ellensburg, WA to stay with my friend Vinny for two nights who now goes to CWU.
Last night I decided to scrap the attempt to win a trip to the Bahamas. The tournament there is in early January, so I would have a month and a half to win a seat which would be very doable considering the fact that I was right on the doorstep 4 times in the past week. However, after talking to my brother, he told me about 3 concerts in Denver in early January that I really want to go to, so I will be doing that instead, in less I change my mind again. Also, the Bahamas tournament will be extremely tough because it's 18+ to play, and is run by poker stars, so all of the internet poker players will be down there making the tournament much tougher than most large buy-in events. This tournament goes on every year, so maybe next year I will go. I also feel like I need to bring at least one or two people when i do go because the accommodations at the Atlantis are so nice that I would feel like it's a semi-waste going my myself.
Wish me luck in Pendleton. Besides my previous success there, the tournament is very fun with a lot of very nice people; more so that any other tournament that I've been to. The atmosphere is very good there, as everyone is there foremost to have fun, which is also there main reason that I play poker.

Some tournies
I played some tournaments today starting at around noon. I busted out close to the money in the biggest one which had a $500,000 prize pool, which was disappointing. However, I took second in one for $3400 or so. The guy made unbelievably great hands when we were down to heads up, so I had very little chance as he entered heads-up play with a 2:1 chip advantage. I also lost $800 playing heads up cash when I got all in ahead twice within 5 hands. Once I had top pair vs. a flush draw, and once I had AA vs. a pair of tens and he made two pair. I had a 66% chance then a 83ish% chance of winning in those two hands. Oh well, nothing I can do about that.
There were some very good college football games on today. I loved watching Illinios beat OSU, and of course watching Nebraska put 72 (or 73) up against KSU. I found myself actually routing for UCLA over ASU even though I don't like UCLA. I guess UCLA had been beaten up bad enough this year, and I wanted ASU to take another loss because they are so over rated. Right now Florida is on, and they are always fun to watch, but I'm going to go do something because I will be planted on the couch all day tomorrow playing the big sunday online tournaments. Sunday is the day that all the sites have their big tournaments with million dollar prize pools. I'm playing well, so maybe tomorrow will be my day to take one of those.

New Blog
After becoming interested in reading some blogs and hearing some clamoring for me to start one of my own, I have decided to start this blog. It will mainly detail my poker life, but may have some other topics mixed in. Some of the other poker blogs that I have read tell the exact dollar gain or loss that that player has taken every day. I have always been a bit more reclusive about my finances, so I will do this some days, but not everyday. I think it will give some people a better feel for a common day if I do give details on some days, but it won't disclose more information than I want to give. I have also become more open to sharing since there are websites that tell a large amount of win/loss for every online player.
11/8/07
I am just getting back into playing poker after not doing hardly any in the past couple months. I had an unbelievable trip to Europe with Matt Ricatto, then I was in Denver going to Colorado Rockies (NL Champs) World Series games, golfing, and hanging with the family. I never thought I would be, but I really was a bit rusty after the hiatus. After kinda running in place for a few days and getting significantly more frustrated than usual, yesterday was a very fun day of poker. (Side note: I handle losing days very easily after several winning days, but after a long layoff I guess I subconsciously wanted to get started going forward instead of backward.) So yesterday I got a new computer in the morning which i love so far. It's an HP, which I didn't know much about until recently with a very large screen. Once it was up and running, I played some heads-up (one on one) no-limit hold 'em (NLHE). I don't really remember much specifically, but I know I did well. I have had success in the past in all levels up to 5/10 blinds, but I decided that I would not play 5/10 blinds ($1000) buy-in for a while until I dominate the lower levels for a while. I have recently decided to step up my aggression even though i would say that I was easily in the top 1% of most aggressive poker players even before this new declaration. I still change gears a bit depending on the opponent, but I guess my default aggression level has recently been turned up a notch.
I worked out in the late afternoon, then ate some Thai food and then came back to play some tournaments online. Recently I've been trying to win a trip to the Bahamas which includes a $8000 buy in to a tournament and $4000 worth of accommodations at the Atlantis resort. I have gotten a 7th, 6th, and 4th in the past week when first place gets the package. Last night I got down to the final two of 160 entrants and lost. That was a bit disappointing because I had a nice stack and most of the final table was comprised of average players. The other very good player was the guy who won. It ended up in a coin flip when he had about 60% of the chips when we were all in pre-flop with A9 vs. 88. Obviously he won, and I won the massive second prize of $0.00. Almost all tournaments pay the top 10%, but this was a winner take all. This was easier to swallow because I could not point to one bad play or missed opportunity that could have changes the outcome. About an hour before the final table of this tournament, I won a 6-handed (6 players per table, instead of the standard 9) on Full Tilt for $2355. All in all, good day and good job by new computer who paid for himself in his first day.
11/9/07
I had been on a good sleep schedule until I was kept up by the tournaments last night, so I didn't wake up until 11:30 today. I hopelessly watched the stock market tumble before firing up some poker games. my friend Mooney wanted me to watch him and go through some thinking with him before he made his decisions, so I happily did this while I was playing. I played some 3/6 heads up and was dominating a couple guys and then got really lucky in a $1400 pot when I got it all in as a 90% dog. Oops. I probably won about $1500 in those heads-up matches before I went to work out, eat, and went to best buy to pick up my Sony Vaio that's on the disabled list with a broken hard drive. When I got home I fired up about 6 tournaments and cashed in 2. One was barely for my money back, and the other one was for $380. I took 18th in the poker stars $109 nightly tounament when my pocket tens couldn't hold up to AJ when we were all in preflop. I would have had a top 2 stack with 18 left and aiming for $8000 for first had I won that "coinflip," but it wasn't meant to be. While these tournaments were finishing, I played some heads up and made about $500. I played one hyper-aggresive player so we butted heads for a while at 3/6 blinds, and after being down 800, to up 200 and back to down 400 then even, I decided that I was going to find an easier opponent. While that bloodbath was going on, I picked off about $400 from one guy and a couple hundred from another at 2/4.
It was a good day alltogether, and It's nice to be working out regularly again after a couple months of not being able to. I think it gives me more energy, and makes me feel better altogether. This weekend I plan on playing poker a lot and watching football at the same time. I have been going out a lot over the past couple months and drinking more than usual, so after last weekend I've gone into health mode for a little bit while I'm not traveling (only 3 days until I leave again, but I'll go over that tomorrow)
